CITB site management safety training scheme (SMSTS) (Refresher)

The Health & Safety North East team is committed to provide top quality training courses to ensure safer working environments across the UK. This includes providing refresher courses, so previous attendees can brush up on their skills, as well as learn about any new regulations or responsibilities they should be aware of.

One of the refreshers HSNE offers in the CITB Site Safety Plus Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) health and safety course. This recap helps site managers, who previously attended the 5 day course, to re-qualify and develop a better understanding of the legal, moral and social responsibilities of their role, and to manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions.

Candidates must already hold a Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) Certificate from within the previous five years.

Candidates will gain knowledge and skills in:

  • The current focus of HSE’s attention.
  • Risk assessment and method statements.
  • The CDM regulations of 2015.
  • Construction Health, Safety and Welfare (CDM part 2)
  • Reporting of Accidents, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences (RIDDOR)
  • Overview and changes to the current legislation affecting construction to include:
    • Work at Height Regulations 2005
    • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002
    • Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005
    • Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005
    • Fire on construction sites including Fire Safety Order 2005
    • Construction waste and Site Waste Management Plans

A maximum of 20 trainees is accepted on each course, giving each attendee the opportunity to get the most possible out of the refresher. To ensure top quality training, all Health & Safety North East instructors are fully trained and HSE/CITB accredited, and must possess the NEBOSH construction certificate as a minimum.

The SMSTS Refresher course takes place over 15 hours in a two day period, either in-house or at one of the national HSNE training centres. There is a definite benefit to in-house training as the course can be tailored to a specific work environment and activities. This will significantly reduce costs to the client.

Assessment and Achievement

A multiple choice examination is conducted at the conclusion of training. All training is carried out in accordance with Nationally Accredited Standards, so each successful candidate is issued a certificate of attainment from the CITB Construction Skills.
